Timeline of Art History

Based on the collection at the Metropolitan Institute of Art, this site presents international examples of art from prehistory through the 1600's (additional years continually added, completion estimate 2004). Each object selected is placed in context in history.

Web Gallery of Art

This site contains almost 12,000 images of European paintings and sculptures created from 1150-1800. It is searchable by artist or title of work, biographies of artists, and additional information is available on some of the works. Images show a lot of detail because thumbnails open to full screen size in a separate window.
